Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has announced that the Indian-made Nexon will be introduced in South Africa as the Tata Osprey during the third quarter of 2026. The compact SUV will become the fifth model in the brand’s South African line-up, joining the Tiago, Punch, Curvv and Harrier. The Indian-made SUV will be sold under a different name in South Africa, with Tata Motors saying the name Osprey is derived from a bird of prey commonly found around the country. The company says the name reflects the SUV’s adventurous character while giving it local significance.Apart from the new name, Tata Motors has not announced any major changes to the SUV. The Osprey will be based on the Indian-spec Nexon, while details on variants, powertrain options and pricing will be revealed closer to its launch in the third quarter of 2026. Tata has confirmed that the Osprey will retain the Nexon’s five-star NCAP safety rating.Details of the drive for the South African market are yet to be announced. In India, the Nexon is offered with a 120hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and a 115hp 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, mated to a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 5-speed AMT or 6-speed dual-clutch transmission depending on the automatic transmission. The Osprey is expected to carry over the Nexon’s equipment list, including dual 10.25-inch screens, automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, a JBL audio system and an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite.Osprey will be positioned below Curvv in South Africa, similar to the Indian market. Tata Motors said the expansion follows growing customer demand since the brand re-entered South Africa in August 2025, and Allison described the Osprey’s arrival as another milestone for the company’s growth in the market.Commenting on the launch, Jeff Allison, General Manager, Marketing and Product, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa, said: “Customers in South Africa are increasingly looking for vehicles that combine contemporary style, technology, practicality and safety with excellent value for money, and the Tata Osprey delivers on all fronts.”
