Christopher Nolan has built his entire career on the belief that the real world is more cinematic than anything the screen can produce, and “The Odyssey” takes that idea further than any film he’s made before. Filming in six countries using a large-format theatrical camera and no green screens, Nolan filmed Homer’s ancient epic and found its landscapes alive and waiting in the real world. At CinemaCon in April, he described the experience as “an absolute nightmare for the film, but in all the right ways,” adding, “We traveled all over the world to make this movie because this is The Odyssey. You’ll be happy to hear how difficult it was for us, because it’s bound to be difficult. That’s the nature of the story. You’ll be happy with the major locations you’ve visited here.”
