Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands manager following Oranje’s shock defeat to Morocco, ending his second spell in charge with the earliest elimination in the Dutch team’s history.The 63-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands drew 1-1 in the last 32 and lost 2-3 on penalties to Morocco. This marked the first time in World Cup history that the Netherlands failed to reach at least the last 16.
Koeman announces emotional resignation
Koeman confirmed his resignation in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, where he admitted the World Cup disappointment was weighing heavily on him.“I have decided to end my tenure as coach of the Dutch national team. We all dream of a World Cup where we will make history. We didn’t succeed. No one is more disappointed than me. As the national team coach, you have this responsibility. I have always felt this way and always will feel this way,” Koeman wrote.The former Barcelona manager also reflected on how his priorities outside of football have changed in recent years.“Also, the past few years have made me realize once again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless.”Koeman added that it was not an easy decision to leave after working closely with the team for several years.“Precisely because I have worked closely with the coaching staff and this group of players for a long time, this decision was not easy to make. I am grateful and express my sincere thanks for the dedication shown by everyone involved with the Oranje during my tenure as head coach.”He also revealed that he hopes to spend more time with his family.“I have decided now is the perfect time to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren. At this moment, it feels like the right and most natural decision.”
Historic World Cup disappointment
Koeman’s resignation is one of the biggest shocks of this World Cup. The Netherlands scored 10 goals in the group stage and led Morocco, but were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in the penalty shootout.It was the Netherlands’ third consecutive penalty shootout elimination from the World Cup, ending their impressive run of 11 previous appearances at the World Cup, reaching at least the last 16 each time.During his two spells in charge, Koeman led the Netherlands to win Euro 2021, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, while also leading the Oranje to the 2019 UEFA Nations League final. He led the team to participate in 64 official international matches and led the team to the semi-finals of the 2024 European Cup.
KNVB supports Koeman’s decision
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Koeman has informed the Football Association that he will no longer fulfill his current contract.Technical director Nigel de Jong paid tribute to the outgoing coach, saying: “Ronald has dedicated himself with confidence over the past few years and made an important contribution to the Dutch national team. On behalf of the Dutch national team, I would like to express a huge thank you for this.”The federation also condemned the racist and discriminatory abuse directed at several Dutch players following the defeat, stressing that “racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not online, not in our society.”
