As the group stages of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup enter the final stages, attention turns to one of the most interesting qualification battles in the tournament – the battle for the third-placed team to clinch a spot in the last 32.For the first time in the history of the World Cup, 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of 4 teams each. While the top two teams in each group automatically advance to the knockout stages, they are not alone. The eight third-place teams with the best results in the 12 groups will also advance to complete the knockout round of 32 teams.This means that 24 teams will advance directly through the top two teams in the group, and the other 8 teams will gain seats through third place. The competition for the knockout rounds is heating up

How do the best third-place teams rank?
Once all group stage matches have concluded, FIFA will compare the results of the 12 third-placed teams in their respective groups.Ranking criteria are applied in the following order:
- 1. The most points gained in all group matches.
- 2. The goal difference advantage in all group matches is obvious.
- 3. The team with the most goals in all group stages.
- 4. Top team conduct ranking, determined by yellow and red cards received by players and team officials.
- 5. Ranked highest in the latest FIFA world rankings.
The top eight teams this time will advance to the top 32, and the remaining four third-place teams will be sent home.
Crucial games are yet to come
There are still several decisive games before the knockout results are clear. Australia and Paraguay will compete in virtual knockout rounds, while the winners of Japan vs. Sweden and Austria vs. Algeria are guaranteed passage to the next round. If Cape Verde can defeat Saudi Arabia, it will make history and enter the knockout rounds, while Colombia and Portugal will compete for the top spot in Group K.By Sunday morning (India), the identities of all 32 knockout teams will finally be revealed.
