It wasn’t easy, but she was hilarious. We talked a lot about what her character, Mary Jane, was going through. Although “Punjab” became one of the most controversial films of its time, Chaubey said creating controversy was never the goal behind the project.“I think so, although I never set out to make a controversial film. It ended up being a pretty original character. I also have to thank Shahid for creating this character. He also brought his own imagination and ideas to shape the character.”The director also recalled that he was surprised by Shahid’s immediate enthusiasm for the role.“He really liked the script and said yes immediately. I was surprised. He told me he thought it was a great opportunity. He said, ‘How many times can I play a character as crazy as this?'”
Abhishek Chaubey responds to criticism over Punjab’s image
After the release of “Udta Punjab”, it faced criticism from some quarters for allegedly portraying the state in a negative light. However, Jobe insists that the film was made out of concern rather than judgement.“If we don’t talk about our problems honestly and openly, how can we expect to solve them? That attitude has to change. Our intention is never to tarnish any image. We come from a place of love and compassion.”The filmmaker believes films can play a role in encouraging dialogue around difficult social issues.

Although the film is still attracting new audiences a decade after its release, Jobe said a sequel was never part of his plan. “I never thought about doing a sequel.
