The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of very heavy rainfall in the city on Saturday, July 4.All schools and colleges in Mumbai have been directed to remain closed for afternoon classes on July 4 in view of the weather conditions. This decision is a precautionary measure to ensure student safety.The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also appealed to residents to stay indoors and go out only when absolutely necessary.
Schools and colleges closed as precautionary measure
According to IMD, Mumbai is likely to experience heavy rainfall during the day, along with wind gusts of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.Earlier on Saturday, the city had average rainfall of 99mm in the 24 hours to 8am. The rainfall in the eastern suburbs was 98 mm, and the rainfall in the western suburbs was 94 mm.
High tide warning issued in Mumbai
The Meteorological Service also warned that high tides could intensify flooding in low-lying areas. A high tide of 4.26 meters is expected at 2:50 pm on Saturday and another 3.60 meters at 2:52 am on Sunday. Low tides are expected at 8:56 pm Saturday and 8:22 am Sunday.
Authorities advise residents to stay indoors
Authorities advise people to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor official weather updates. Students and parents are also advised to liaise with their respective schools and colleges for further announcements regarding courses.
