Although the home is located in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, the real location is Unionville, 20 miles northeast of Toronto, Canada. The initial scenes of the first season were shot at the mansion, and the episodes following the pilot were shot on a set in Los Angeles.

The current owners have owned the residence since 1994 and use it for rental purposes.
