Deschamps stepped down after leading France to another good run at the World Cup, with France exiting in the semi-finals and ultimately finishing fourth at the World Cup. During his time in charge, Deschamps restored France’s place among international football’s elite. He led the team to the 2018 World Cup Championship, the 2022 World Cup Finals, the 2016 European Cup Finals and the 2021 UEFA Nations League Championship, making him one of the most successful coaches in the country.

Zidane will return to coaching for the first time since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. His coaching career with the Spanish giants has been one of the most successful in modern football, highlighted by three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018. In addition to his success in Europe, Zidane also won two La Liga titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups and multiple domestic honors during his two spells at the Santiago Bernabeu.The France job has long been seen as the next logical step in Zidane’s coaching career, with speculation surrounding his appointment continuing for several years.Before becoming an elite coach, Zidane enjoyed an iconic career with the French national team. He led France to their first World Cup title in 1998, scoring twice in the final against Brazil, before playing a key role in France’s Euro 2000 success. His performances earned him the 1998 Ballon d’Or, recognizing him as the best footballer in the world.Zidane represented France in 108 international matches and scored 31 goals. His last appearance came in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy, where he was sent off in extra time due to Materazzi’s infamous incident.
Attention turns to Nations League fixtures
France’s new coach is expected to take charge ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The Gallic Roosters are scheduled to play away to Türkiye on September 25th, followed by Belgium on September 28th. They will then face Italy on October 2 at the Stade de France.
