Erling Haaland has guided Norway into the knockout stages of the World Cup, but the striker is not getting carried away. After scoring twice in Norway’s 3-2 win over Senegal on Tuesday, Haaland said the team should enjoy the moment and not start talking about winning games. The Manchester City forward has now scored four goals at the World Cup, level with France’s Kylian Mbappe and one behind Messi. Norway’s win also moves them six points above France in Group One, with the two teams due to meet on Friday to decide the group winner. When asked about facing France, Haaland’s answer was somewhat realistic.“I don’t care, we’re done. They could probably beat us and go on to win the whole game.”Norway is participating in the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Haaland has now scored 59 goals in 52 international games, an achievement he said deserves appreciation. When asked if this would be his World Cup, he said:“It depends on what you mean. To advance and get to the group stage for the first time in 28 years, yes, I would say that.”“Winning the World Cup, absolutely not. I think let’s be realistic and make every Norwegian on the planet happy today.”Norway’s progress sparked celebrations from supporters. Before the game, fans gathered in Times Square for the now-famous Viking Street celebrations, which have become a symbol of Norway’s World Cup campaign. After the win, the players celebrated on the pitch.Speaking about the moment, Haaland said: “It was crazy.”“Martin (Odegaard) and I discussed a bit before the game whether we should join in if everything went the way it was, and it did, so I would say it’s a very special moment for Norway as a whole.”The 25-year-old likened the feeling to one of the most important moments of his career.“I think it’s the biggest night I’ve ever had in my life. After (winning) the (2023) Champions League final, I felt a little bit the same way. It was unbelievably huge. I’m very proud, all of it.”With Norway already in the knockout stages, attention now turns to their final group game against France, which will decide who finishes top of Group One.
