India just missed out on a medal in the first championship event of the 2026 Commonwealth Games as Ashok Kumar Malik finished fourth, Parmjit Kumar Placed seventh in Friday’s men’s lightweight para-weightlifting competition.Ashok came closest to reaching the podium but narrowly missed it despite two successful lifts.The competition featured athletes from multiple weight categories competing in the overall medal event. In such events, final rankings are determined using a coefficient formula that calculates points based on an athlete’s weight and their best successful lift.Parmjit successfully lifted 176 kilograms from the beginning and received two green lights and one red light from the referee. He then attempted to lift 179 kilograms but failed to complete the lift.Ashok started off strong and managed to lift 195kg, the heaviest opening lift in the field.In the second round, Parmjit tried again with 179 kg, but failed to complete the attempt.Ashok then successfully lifted 200 kg. The effort earned him 143.8 points, putting him in contention for a medal.Parmjit made his last attempt with 179 kg. Although he completed the lift, the referee ruled it invalid and gave him three red lights.Ashok chose 205 kg for his final attempt, which would be the heaviest he had successfully lifted in his career. However, even with a successful lift, he would still remain fourth due to the coefficient scoring system. He failed to complete the attempt and finished fourth with 143.8 points.Parmjit ranked seventh with 135.6 points.England’s Mark Swann won the gold medal with a score of 153.902.Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike won the silver medal with 153.874 points, and Malaysia’s Bonnie Banyaw Gustin won the bronze medal with 153.5 points.
