The news was first shared by Noa van der Bij, who posted a photo of herself and Gakpo holding hands under a blanket and knitted baby hat.“It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,” she wrote.“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever love. Forever our son.”Vanderbilt later shared another deeply personal message, accompanied by photos of candles and crosses, describing an experience attending church with the couple’s young son, Samuel.

“We went to church and lit candles. Then we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.“There was only one child there. His name was Elijah. It was the most beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”Gakpo also addressed the tragedy in his message, asking for understanding during an extremely difficult time for his family.“This is an extremely difficult time for our family.“We ask that you protect our privacy and space. The news comes as Gakpo is playing for the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup in North America.Vanderbilt was in the stands during the Netherlands’ opening 2-2 draw with Japan two weeks ago, supporting Gakpo in the early stages of the game.Since then, the Liverpool striker has played a leading role in Ronald Koeman’s side’s victory in Group F.
