Official data provided by the House of Representatives shows that there are 60,032 teaching vacancies in schools in the state. The Ministry of Education also informed Congress that 7,948 schools did not meet the required teacher-student ratio, raising concerns about classroom teaching and compliance with educational standards.The data further revealed that there are 32,321 schools with less than 30 students, reflecting declining enrollment in several districts of Assam.Opposition parties have expressed concern about high vacancies and low enrollment rates, which they say remain major obstacles to improving learning outcomes in public schools. Nearly 25,000 institutions seek provincialization
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed the assembly that nearly 25,000 educational institutions have applied for provincial status after the opening of the online portal.According to data shared by the House of Representatives, the schools that applied include 6,163 lower elementary schools, 10,101 upper elementary schools, 5,733 high schools and 1,222 high schools.Bugu said the applications are being examined under the provisions of the Assam Education Act (Provincialization of Teachers Services and Reorganization of Educational Institutions) and relevant rules. He also said that recruitment of teachers and principals in government schools is done in accordance with court directives and state recruitment policies.The government insists it is taking steps to fill vacant positions, rationalize resources and strengthen the school education system.
