The life of legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan, who led the Assam army to a historic victory over the Mughals at the Battle of Sarai Ghat, may soon be adapted to the big screen. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the filmmaker Adityadar has been approached to direct a major Hindi biopic on the famous military leader.Addressing a Facebook Live session, the Chief Minister said the government wanted to bring the extraordinary story of Lachit Borphukan to audiences in India and around the world.
Who is Ratchet Bolpkan?
Lachit Borphukan is revered as one of Assam’s greatest military commanders and is regarded as a symbol of courage, patriotism and selfless leadership. He was born in Chaledeo on November 24, 1622, the youngest son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua, commander-in-chief of the Ahom army under King Pratap Singha, and Kunti Moran. Rachit grew up during the long Mughal-Ahom conflict and received training in military strategy, governance, economics, Ahom scripture and religion, preparing him for a career in public service.He rose steadily through various important administrative and military positions, serving as Hanstidhara Tamuli, Ghura Baruah, Shimaluguria Phukan and Dulakasharia Baruah, before King Chakradhwaj Singha appointed him Borphukan, the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army. The king was entrusted with recapturing Guwahati from the Mughals and presented him with a gold-hilted sword (Handang) as a mark of honour.Rajat won lasting acclaim for leading the Ahom army against the Mughals at the historic Battle of Sarai Ghat in 1671, one of the most significant military victories in Indian history. Facing a much larger Mughal army led by Raja Ram Singh I sent by Emperor Aurangzeb, the Rajith relied on guerrilla tactics and a deep knowledge of the Brahmaputra River to overcome their numerical disadvantage.Despite battling severe illness during the decisive phase of the campaign, Lassiter personally boarded a warship when some of his soldiers began to retreat. According to historical records, he regrouped and declared that he would rather die than abandon the battlefield. Inspired by his courage, the Ahom army regrouped and forced the Mughal army to retreat, effectively halting Mughal expansion into Assam.Lachit Borphukan died of natural causes about a year after the victory. His monument, Lachit Maidam, was built in 1672 at Hoolungapara near Jorhat. His leadership and sacrifice continue to inspire generations and Lachit Divas is celebrated every year on November 24 in Assam to commemorate his birth, heroic deeds and victory at Saraighat. His legacy is also recognized nationally through the Rashit Bolpkan Gold Medal, awarded annually by the National Defense Academy to cadets who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities, reflecting the ideals of remembering this legendary commander.

Share details about the proposed film, Himanta Biswa Sarma Said that discussions with Aditya Dhar have begun.Talking about Dhar’s latest blockbuster, he said, “The film Durandhar was very popular. Aditya Dhar is the director and he is one of the most well-known names of his generation,” Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.The chief minister said that the government hopes to make a major Hindi film to introduce the story of Lachit Borphukan to the global audience.“I think if our government can make a film about Ratchit Bolpurkan, we can make his heroic deeds known globally. And that will be a special achievement for us,” he said.
Sarma also revealed that Dar is expected to visit Assam in August for further discussions on the project.However, he clarified that even if Dahl ends up not being able to direct the biopic, the biopic will still go ahead.“If Aditya Dar is unable to direct the film, we will contact other directors. Our goal is to ensure a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan,” he said.The proposed project is part of the Assam government’s larger initiative to promote the state’s history through films. In the 2026-27 budget, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.As of now, Aditya Dal has not publicly responded to the chief minister’s statement or confirmed his next directorial project after the success of “Durandhar: Revenge”.
