Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach, ending a tenure of less than three years in the job following the country’s shock exit from the World Cup.The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, four days after Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the last 32 after a 1-1 draw.The result marked Germany’s third consecutive appearance in the last 16 of the World Cup.He resigned after discussions with the federation. Nagelsmann had earlier said he intended to stay despite having two years left on his contract, reportedly making him one of the highest-paid coaches at the World Cup.His future came under scrutiny during the tournament, with his tactics and team selection criticized.Germany’s loss to Paraguay was also their first penalty shootout defeat at the World Cup. The result prevents them from reaching the last 16, where they will face France.Germany topped the group after defeating Curacao and Ivory Coast. However, they looked unconvincing as they lost to Ecuador in their final group game.Nagelsmann has also been questioned for his decision to bring experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back into the starting lineup and for regularly using Joshua Kimmich instead of his preferred midfield role.Nagelsmann was appointed as the head coach of the German team in September 2023. Before this World Cup, he also led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Cup.Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly one of the leading candidates to succeed him.
