Mariska Hargitay The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on September 14 on NBC.NBCUniversal announced Hargitay as host on Tuesday, the day before the nominations were announced. The show will also be broadcast live on Peacock and take place at the Peacock Theatre, the long-time home of the Emmy Awards and soon the Academy Awards.Hargitay, 62, has been one of NBC’s iconic figures since 1999 when she starred in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” one of the longest-running dramas in television history. She was nominated eight times for her role as detective Olivia Benson and won the award for Lead Actress in a Television Series in 2006. As we all know, “SVU” Season 28 will air this fall and is expected to have more than 600 episodes. Hargitay has used the platform to become an advocate for victims of sexual assault.She could be nominated again this year as director and producer of “My Mama Jayne,” a documentary about her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Hargitay was also a regular on television earlier this year, having a front-row seat to her beloved New York Knicks’ championship game at Madison Square Garden.Emmy broadcast roles rotate among the four major broadcast networks, although nominations for them have become more rare in the streaming age. Hargitay is the rare non-comedian who was anchored last year on CBS by Nate Bargatze.NBC is unlikely to see many nominations in key categories on Wednesday, although the all-time Emmy leader “Saturday Night Live” always gets a nod.Apple TV+’s “Pluribus” and HBO Max’s “The Pitt,” starring longtime NBC star Noah Wyle, are expected to be among the major nominees after being announced at the Television Academy in Los Angeles by recent winners Liza Colon-Zayas and Jeff Hiller.
