New Delhi: The final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday may not be Rohit SharmaAfter all, it was Team India’s last game. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Saturday dismissed retirement speculations and reiterated that the senior opener remains firmly in India’s ODI plans. The clarification comes amid uncertainty over Rohit Sharma’s future following news that the veteran opener will no longer be an automatic selection apart from the ongoing England series, with selectors considering every ODI pick in the build-up to the 2027 World Cup. However, Saikia said no decision has been taken on Rohit’s future.“There is a lot of speculation in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I would like to firmly assert that there is no discussion whatsoever about Rohit playing his final game at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia was quoted as saying by PTI.Saikia also made it clear that Rohit remains an integral part of India’s ODI system.“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the plans. In other words, the ODI at Lord’s will not be his last game,” the BCCI secretary confirmed. The Times of India had earlier reported that Rohit is no longer guaranteed a place in India’s ODI XI as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup gather pace and the selectors are keen to assess the form and fitness of each player. The assessment is that the door remains open for Rohit to move on, as long as he continues to prove his place through performances. Rohit is currently 13 games away from becoming the eighth player in ODI history to play 300 matches.
