Rasika Dugal She’s known for playing unusual, layered characters, although she admits there was a time when she wasn’t sure where her career was going. While ‘Mirzapur’ made her a household name, Rasika says ‘Manto’ helped her get through one of the toughest phases of her career. In a recent interview, she talks about the role that changed her life, the rough times between Kissa and Manto, why she’s still willing to audition, and how a text message finally landed her the big role of Bina Tripathi.
Rasika Dugal pulls herself out of slump in ‘Manto’
Talking about the project that she considers her true breakthrough, Rasika said that while “Mirzapur” attracted the widest audience, “Manto” arrived at the moment when she needed it the most. She told India Today: “People see me in a different light and it spreads to such a wide audience, which is definitely Mirzapur. But I think it was Manto who got me out of the slump. There is definitely a gap between Qissa and Manto, and I didn’t make much progress. There were a lot of rejections at that time, which was very uncomfortable. I definitely had this feeling during that time: ‘Where do we go from here? Where should I go now? Which door should I knock on, who should I ask? ‘”.

She further recalled how her character in Mirzapur almost disappeared. Even though she knew the creator personally Karan Anshumanshe hesitated whether to find a job with him. “For Mirzapur, I know Karan Anshuman, one of the creators and directors of the first season. I met him socially and I was told he was working on the show. I said, “If Karan wants to pick me, he will call me.” My friend said, “Why don’t you send him a message to remind him?” I said, “I don’t want to embarrass him.” Friends texting you “Role de do” is a situation you can’t get out of. But I said, OK, I’ll send him a message,” the actress said.The actress further added, “Within about a minute I got a response saying, ‘Sure, let’s meet and discuss it.'” When I met him, he said, ‘I just didn’t ask you because you acted opposite Nawaz in Manto. I thought maybe you didn’t want to do a streaming show. Maybe you just want to make movies. I said, “Are you angry?” Of course I will. When I read this part, I thought, “Wow, thank you.” It almost scared me.
