Legendary playback singer S Janaki, known as the “Nightingale of South India”, passed away at the age of 88 at the Apollo Hospitals in Mysuru due to age-related health complications.After her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of the same day.She was admitted to the hospital at 12:49 pm on July 11, according to a press release from Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysore. “Despite vigorous medical care and continued monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, she suffered cardiac arrest during the course of treatment,” the release read.She was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.Condolences poured in from political leaders across party lines, who remembered the veteran singer’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed his deep condolences on the death of the legendary playback singer who was fondly called ‘Gaana Kogile’.In a statement, the CM said he was deeply shocked by the news of the death of iconic Indian singer and multi-lingual singer S Janaki.“S Janaki’s songs will remain immortal as long as Kannada exists. We grew up listening to Kannada songs in her voice. She infused sweetness into the beauty of Kannada,” Shivakumar said.Recalling her contribution, he added, “Janakamma was simplicity personified. Her incomparable voice will forever be immortalized in the cultural landscape of Karnataka. Although she was originally from Andhra Pradesh, her love for Kannada led her to settle in Mysore.
