Delhi High Court upholds original verdict
The case dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut “Ata Pata Laapata”. The film failed at the box office and the actor was unable to repay the loan. As interest accrued, the outstanding amount reportedly rose to nearly Rs 9 crore, leading to a protracted legal battle.In 2018, a district court found Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha Yadav guilty and sentenced them to six months in jail. In 2019, a session court upheld the verdict, prompting the actor to challenge it in the Delhi High Court.In June 2024, the High Court granted a temporary reprieve and directed him to take “sincere and genuine steps” to clear the outstanding amount of nearly Rs 9 crore. However, on February 2 this year, the court ordered him to surrender. Rajpal surrendered on February 5 and remained in jail for a few days before being released on interim bail on February 16 after paying Rs 150 crore.On Friday, July 10, the High Court upheld the original verdict and reduced the sentence to three months. It also imposed a fine of Rs 105 crore in each case, totaling Rs 735 crore. His wife Radha Rajpal Yadav was ordered to pay a fine of over Rs 5 lakh in each case.
Court arrests Rajpal Yadav
The court said that despite being given multiple opportunities, Rajpal Yadav repeatedly failed to fulfill his commitments regarding repayment.“We gave him the opportunity to honor the settlement agreement. He [Yadav] His lawyers made multiple representations and assurances, which he failed to fulfill despite repeated opportunities and assurances,” the court observed, according to the Bar Association.
