A new chapter after selling rural refuge

Barrymore’s RV adventure began shortly after her spacious six-bedroom, nine-bathroom vacation home in Harrison, Westchester County, entered the final stages of sale. The actress purchased the historic 12-acre estate in 2024 for $4.4 million before listing it for $4.99 million earlier this year. The property, which dates back to the 1740s, quickly found a buyer and is currently awaiting sale. However, transforming the historic home into her dream country retreat proved more challenging than expected.

Decorating becomes a daunting task

Barrymore previously spoke about the project, revealing that what she initially thought would be a cosmetic makeover evolved into a complete structural overhaul. The extensive work included replacing the home’s heating, plumbing and air conditioning systems, along with a major redesign of the kitchen to create a brighter, more open living space, a process she said took nearly a year of engineering time.Barrymore likened the experience to the classic movie “The Money Pit,” joking that the renovation mirrored the dilemma faced by the homeowners in the movie. While the project ultimately transformed the historic estate into a peaceful family retreat, Barrymore explains that the lengthy renovation meant her family’s lifestyle had changed by the time it was completed. As her daughters’ schedules became increasingly busy, country holidays no longer suited their needs, prompting her decision to sell.Despite leaving the property, Barrymore has often said that the renovation allowed her to indulge in one of her greatest passions, interior design, and she even chose to live in the house while part of the restoration was in progress rather than wait for the work to be completed.
