Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim got off to a dream start for the Pharaohs in their World Cup last-16 tie against Argentina, scoring in the 15th minute to give the African side a 1-0 lead over the defending champions. The 33-year-old centre-back latched on to a cross in the penalty area and headed the ball past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for his second international goal.Ibrahim was born in Mansoura on February 10, 1993 and has spent his entire career in Egypt. After starting at Mansoura SC, he moved to Zamalek in 2013 and was subsequently loaned to Smukha. Since joining Al Ahly in January 2019, he has become one of Egypt’s most reliable defenders. At club level, Ibrahim made over 225 appearances for Al Ahli, scoring 15 goals in all competitions. During his time with the Cairo giants, he won five Egyptian Premier League titles, four African Champions League titles, four Egyptian Cup titles and five Egyptian Super Cup titles, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most successful defenders.Ibrahim made his first appearance for the Egyptian national team in March 2022 and has now played 23 times for the national team. His goal against Argentina was only his second for the national team, but it was hardly likely to come on a bigger stage. The experienced defender is a key figure in Egypt’s campaign for the 2026 World Cup, having started four of the five games leading up to the knockout rounds. His header against Argentina was also his first goal of this World Cup.While Ibrahim isn’t known for his offensive output, he has built his career on defensive stability, aerial dominance and leadership. However, the veteran centre-back hit the headlines with one of the biggest moments in Egypt’s World Cup history against Lionel Messi and Argentina.
