Senior Lyricist Varamutu An emotional appeal is made to the Tamil Nadu government to build a memorial to the legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja. The acclaimed director, fondly known as ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’, passed away on June 10 after battling age-related health issues. He was buried with state honors in his hometown in Theni District. Weeks after his death, Vairamuthu visited the cemetery and revealed his plans to meet the chief minister Vijay to ensure it becomes a permanent landmark to commemorate the director’s contribution to Indian cinema.

Vairamuthu calls for setting up memorial at Bharathiraja’s grave

After paying tribute to Bharathiraja’s monument, Varamuthu urged the state government to protect the site by constructing a permanent memorial. Sharing his thoughts on social media, he wrote, “This is where the great Tamil film Himalayas is set. Sleep peacefully after a lifetime of tireless work.” He further appealed, “I request the government to build a monument to Balaraj at this place. I will not hesitate to personally meet Chief Minister Vijay to make this request.”“His heartfelt appeal sparked discussions about paying tribute to one of Tamil cinema’s greatest filmmakers.

In a moving note, Varamuthu spoke of Bharathiraja’s extraordinary contribution to the Tamil film industry and the huge void created after his death.
