Director Anthony Rich said the schedule created a particularly difficult working environment during production on the show’s third season.Speaking on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast hosted by Jessica Radloff, Rich reflected on his first television directing assignment, directing the April 2010 episode titled “Spaghetti Catalyst.” The episode follows the aftermath of a breakup between Galecki’s Leonard and Cuoco’s Penny, an event that occurred one episode prior to the end of “The Return of Wheaton.”

Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco’s breakup comes at a tough time

As Radloff points out, Galecki and Cuoco dated for about two years before breaking up in real life, just four to six weeks before filming the breakup episode. The proximity between their actual separation and their on-screen character’s breakup created a tense atmosphere on set.“By all accounts, they handled it well, but there’s no doubt that it was really, really difficult,” said Radloff, who published a comprehensive book about the series in 2023, of the situation.

Ritchie acknowledged the complexity of the situation and described the week of filming as “a lot going on.” He noted that Galecki and Cuoco were not opposed to portraying their characters’ breakups despite the challenging circumstances. Rather, they are concerned with how the scenes are written and constructed.

Absent Scenes That Haunted the Actors

According to Rich, Galecki and Cuoco felt the writers didn’t adequately show “what actually happened” in the couple’s relationship. At the end of “Whedon Returns,” Penny storms off, but viewers never witness an actual fight or the moment when the characters decide to end their relationship.“Now that we’ve gotten to the bottom of it, no one really knows what to do with this,” Rich explains. He acknowledged that both actors made valid points about the missing scene or scenes, although he ultimately didn’t think it would have had a significant impact on the final episode. Ritchie understands the creative decisions behind the writers’ approach, noting that they preferred not to create “a really sad breakup episode.”“People don’t want to see this. They come here to laugh,” Rich said of audience expectations.

Later in the play, Penny and Leonard finally meet in the apartment’s laundry room. Ritchie remembers that both actors felt the show failed to “give proper attention to the end of the relationship.” Instead, the scene seems to indicate that they have both “moved on” from the relationship.“I remember it was hard for them to even get through it,” Ritchie said, recalling the difficulties the actors went through while filming the emotional moment.

Kaley Cuoco breaks down on set

Rich recounted a particularly poignant moment when Cuoco became visibly emotional while discussing the scene with the director. He described how she “started sobbing”, overwhelmed by the “weight of it all”. The actress briefly left the set to calm down, but Richie found her still crying on Penny’s set.“She said, ‘I thought I could handle it, but it’s kind of caught up with me.’ And she looked at me and said, ‘I ruined your episode.’ I was like, ‘You didn’t ruin my show,'” Richie recalled, emphasizing the mutual understanding between director and actor during difficult moments.Despite the emotional challenges, Ricci praised Cuoco and Galecki’s professionalism. “Rich said that in the end, Cuoco, Galecki and the rest of the cast were ‘such professionals’ that they made the movie work,” the director noted, noting that he never discussed the incident with Cuoco afterward.

In Radloff’s book about the series, Galecki was candid about his feelings about Cuoco. “I love that we were friends. I think I value my relationship with her probably more than any other relationship before or since. We have a relationship that I’m very grateful for. I think that’s part of our great friendship,” he said.Cuoco reflected on how their real-life dynamic affected their on-screen chemistry. “I think a lot of the reason Leonard and Penny work so well together is because of the relationship Johnny and I have off camera. They always cared about each other, and Johnny and I had a similar relationship — after being together for many years. We’ve always had each other’s backs and you can’t lose that. I do think that happens on screen. It makes our relationship fun and cute,” she explains.Actors’ current lives and familiesAccording to People magazine, both actors have moved on with their lives since their breakup.
